A price tag blowout on the Oculus Rift has caused an angry stir on social media. Pre-orders for the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset were originally promised by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey at $350. The actual release price has rocketed to $599.  It’s come as a big letdown with promises of affordable VR for everyone in 2016 and  as the big year for consumer VR. Now its looking like that might be more like 2017.

Whats in the Oculus Rift box.

The Oculus Rift includes:

  • VR headset with built-in headphones and mic
  • sensor
  • Xbox One controller
  • Compelling, made-for-VR content via access to the game EVE: Valkyrie

Oculus has stated that over 100 VR game titles will be available by the end of 2016 including Minecraft. However with the unexpected price hike it remains to be seen if it negatively effects the push for VR game development as a result of less demand.

Oculus Rift Compatible PC Specifications.

The minimum specifications for a PC to run VR games requires a decently spec’d gaming PC however it doesn’t appear to be any higher than current high end gaming standards:

  • graphics card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
  • processor: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • memory: 8GB+ RAM
  • output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
  • input: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
  • operating system: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

Oculus have also announced the availability of an Oculus bundle that includes Oculus Ready PC and a Rift which will be available for pre-order in February starting at $1499.

Palmer Luckey has apologized for the $350 estimate however despite the outcry over the $599 price, the first round of pre-orders from the Oculus website have sold out.

Countries that it will ship to are: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States.
