A trailer for the free online first player shooter First Assault has been released. The game is inspired by the movie and original comic book The Ghost in the Shell, a story which follows a female cyborg cop, Major Motoko Kusanagi, and her partner in a hunt for a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.
First Assault is a combat-based multiplayer team shooter. In the game you play as one of 8 elite augmented soldiers in an urban battlefield set in the future. Characters have the attributes that reflect features from the original movie, such as Motoko Kusanagi’s ‘Therm-optic Camouflage’ cloaking technology.
The game trailer shows off a cyberpunk neon world like that of Ghost in the Shell but what seems to be lacking from the trailer is any indication of an actual narrative. The game trailer shows a lot of action but doesn’t hint at much else, making it look a little worryingly shallow, like CoD with a Ghost in the Shell (GitS) skin.
GitS is credited as one of the most respected manga films made and an adaptation of such a classic into a game that lacks any of the sentiment of the original film has seen some fans feeling a little disappointed. As one fan has pointed out “…GitS was never about running around gunning people down…” Rather it was about the main character trying to understand her existence and whether or not she is “real” or just a program.
IMO the music in the trailer is jarring and doesn’t share the emotion of the original haunting score from the film.
But it is after all, just a trailer so we shouldn’t be too damning just yet.
The game launches in 2016, but you can sign up for a closed beta on the official site firstassaultgame.com. The first beta challenge runs in early October 2015.
