Controversy surrounds the remake of The Ghost in The Shell Movie which is due to start filming in January 2016 with fans calling for a recast of leading star Scarlett Johanson.

Dreamworks is reportedly paying 10 million dollars to the actress Scarlett Johanson for the lead role however purists of the original movie have called for a recast feeling that a Japanese actress should take the part in the live action version of  the cult classic Japanese anime.

A petition published online stated, “The original film is set in Japan, and the major cast members are Japanese. So why would the American remake star a white actress… One recent survey found that in 2013, Asian characters made up only 4.4% of speaking roles in top-grossing Hollywood films

The petition has collected over 50,000 signatures from angry fans. Some are also worried that the Dreamworks and Paramount remake will amount to a dumb Hollywood action movie lacking the spirit of the original, especially considering Scarlett Johansons recent roles in the Avengers.

The original Ghost in The Shell film was released in 1995 and was directed by Mamoru Oshii. The movie was based on a comic book with a story  about a female cyborg cop and her partner who hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.

The Ghost In The Shell Remake is to be directed Rupert Sanders, otherwise known for the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsmen. It is not clear yet how true the remake will be to the original.
