It was 1941 that polygraph inventor William Moulton Marston introduced the comic world to an Amazonian warrior princess fighting for justice, love and peace. Wonder Woman has been in print pretty well ever since. Besides the advantage of superhuman powers from divine origins, her costume includes an arsenal of weapons including the Lasso of Truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets and a tiara which can be thrown as a projectile. Wonder Woman has been included in a number of animated series such as Super Friends and Justice League, actress Lynda Carter played her in a 1970s TV series, and appeared in the 2014 Lego Movie. It is Gal Gadot though, pictured here, who will be the first Wonder Woman live on the big screen.

In 2011 the character was included in DC Comic’s “The New 52” relaunch of its entire line of publications aimed at a new generation of readers. This came with a new origin myth. Wonder Woman is now the goddess daughter of philandering King of the Gods Zeus and Queen Hippolyta. Her teacher Ares considered her a failure as she showed mercy and wouldn’t kill the Minotaur. Later during conflict with her half-brother First Born, father of Wonder Girl, she is forced to kill Ares. After this she takes on his role and title of God of War. Although she is kept busy battling Greek gods and goddesses, along the way she finds her way into the world of mortals as an agent for the Department of Metahuman Affairs under the name of Diana Prince, starts a romantic relationship with Superman, and as a couple they have adventures with Batman. An adult daughter, Fury, is also introduced and she takes on a new costume as outlined in the video.

Gal Gadot will appear alongside Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in the Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice movie to be released in Australia on 24 March 2016. A follow up solo movie, directed by Patty Jenkins and produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder will be released in 2017. Her co-star will be Star Trek’s Chris Pine as Captain Steve Trevor. Others in that cast will include Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Snowpiercer), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter films, The Theory of Everything) and Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Netflix’s House of Cards).
It remains to be seen how fans react overall to the darker look of the Justice League’s new world.
