Michael Fassbender in ‘Assassin’s Creed

Michael Fassbender has been cast to play the part of Callum Lynch in the movie based on the Assassins Creed game, Ubisoft’s mega popular video game series. If you haven’t played them, the games are essentially action-adventure, stealth mixed with historical fiction.  Callum explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and discovers that he is a descendant of a secret Assassins society  and gains the skills of a Master Assassin

Aguilar is a name that should be familiar to fans of the video game. He was a Templar, an organisation existing from ancient times to this day, secretly controlling the world to create their perfect version of it. The Assassins are obviously enemies of The Templars, assassinating them at every opportunity throughout history. Callam uses the knowledge he gains from his ancestor Aguilar to battle the powerful present-day Templars, who are essentially like the Illuminati,  credited with controlling US Presidents as their puppets.

However if you know the games, you will know the true protagonist of the Assassins Creed story was the time-traveling hero Desmond Miles. Miles was somewhat of a reluctant hero in the game, abducted by “Abstergo” and forced to spend life in the “Animus” machine shifting through memories in order to save the world from The Templars, a burden that he wanted to avoid. Hence I couldn’t picture Fassbender as Desmond Miles. Fassbender seems too polished, strong and experienced to play a reluctant rogue.

Interestingly Fassbender has also been signed up as a producer for the film with Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the video game developers and publisher turned film production company. The development of a new character seems like a good idea, with perhaps Ubisoft realizing that its central game protagonist might not translate that well into film.

Starring alongside Fassbender is the gorgeous French actress Marion Cotillard, who has a long list of credits to her name including The Dark Knight Rises (2012),  Inception (2010),  La Vie en Rose (2007) and Big Fish Big Fish (2003).

IMDB lists the movie as due for release in December 2016, so if you haven’t yet experienced the joy of stealthy assassination and wall climbs, there’s plenty of time to work your way through the half dozen major game releases and a long list of extra downloadable content.
