Lots of aliens, superheroes and mythic creatures in upcoming 2016 movies. 2016 will feature some original productions among sequels, prequels and screen adaptations of video games and books. Comic book spin offs will include some game changing installments for Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment and the X Men.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (adventure fantasy). Alice must time travel to save the Mad Hatter as a sequel to the 2010 Alice in Wonderland movie. May 2016.

ASSASSIN’S CREED (action fantasy). Callum Lynch unlocks the genetic memory of a 15th century Crusader ancestor for knowledge and skills to fight the present day Templar organisation. Draws on the video game. December 2016.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. (action fantasy) Trouble in the Justice League as groundwork continues for a darker universe for the DC Comic superheroes. Appearances also by Aquaman, Flash and Wonder Woman. March 2016. Read more about Batman Vs Superman.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (action fantasy) The feud between Captain America and Iron Man sees almost all Marvel characters come to the screen along with Black Panther’s screen debut. May 2016.

CRIMINAL (action thriller) What happens when you put the memories and skills of a dead CIA agent into an unpredictable and dangerous convict in order to thwart a terrorist attack. April 2016.

DEADPOOL (action fantasy) Eighth instalment of the X Men series, dealing with the origin of Marvel Comics’ eponymous character. An R rated revenge rampage on the dark, gory side with a hint of twisted humour. February 2016.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT (action fantasy). The third in the series sees Tris and Four outside the wall surrounding old Chicago, discovering that their home has been a 200 year experiment which is about to be destroyed. March 2016.

THE FIFTH WAVE (action sci-fi). The story of a woman fighting back against alien invasion after a 4 pronged campaign: loss of power, destruction by earthquake, airborne plague and then invasion. January 2016. Read more about the 5th Wave.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (action sci-fi). After 20 years the marauding aliens have returned. This time the world is better prepared but will it be enough? June 2016.

PRIDE + PREJUDICE + ZOMBIES (action horror spoof) After the Black Plague spawns an invasion by the undead, should zombie killing become part of every good housewife’s skills set in post-apocalyptic 19th century England? February 2016

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (action sci-fi). Story of the rebel fighters who stole the Galactic Empire’s Death Star plans which were subsequently carried by Princess Leia in the original 1977 Episode IV. The first film in a standalone Anthology Series. December 2016.

STAR TREK: BEYOND (action sci-fi). Kirk and Spock find themselves without ship or crew, looking for hope in the impossible. Third movie in the reboot series set in the first five years of the USS Enterprise’s roamings. July 2016. Read more about Star Trek Beyond.

SUICIDE SQUAD (action fantasy) A bunch of renegade anti-heroes in DC Comics’ dark universe are assembled to take on the Joker. August 2016.

UNDERWORLD: NEXT GENERATION (action fantasy). Sequel to Underworld: Awakening and fifth in the series introducing a new, younger generation of lycan and vampire leaders. October 2016.

WARCRAFT: THE BEGINNING (action fantasy). A showdown between homeless Orc warriors and the peaceful human realm of Azeroth. Draws on the video game. June 2016. Read more about Warcraft.

X MEN: APOCALYPSE (action fantasy) The8th installment in the series and sequel to Days of Future Past. Professor X and Raven garner opposition to original mutant Apocalypse and his Four Horseman – Angel, Magneto, Psylocke and Storm – who are trying establish a new order on the world’s ashes. May 2016.
