GaymerX is an annual convention in the US focused on games and gaming culture that provides a “queer” friendly and safe space for both gamers and gaymers. And it’s now coming to Australia in 2016 thanks to the work and effort of GX Australia.
GX Australia 2016 will be Australia’s first queer geek/gaming convention. Joshua and Liam are the co-directors of GX Australia and they recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the conference. They are aiming to raise at least $50000 dollars before the 27th of November.
Liam is heavily involved in the Melbourne game community and runs the Game Connect Asia Pacific conference (GCAP) . Joshua started with Sydney Gaymers in 2012 which went from a handful of people to Australia’s biggest Gaymer group. Sydney Gaymers now have more than 1600 members and they hold 3 regular events each month.
In an interview with NerdVana TV, Joshua said “GX Australia has been under discussion for several years and the response to the Kickstarter campaign has been good, with the community excited and engaged with the project... companies have provided support and have been great to work with, and the indie development community has played a big part in the support for the campaign“.
Joshua has been into gaming since childhood and it forms a big part of his identity. He believes that games are one of the most interesting mediums available for stories and they provide an opportunity for experience that can’t be gained through other media.. “…You step into the shoes of people and cultures be they historical or science fiction, that you can’t do otherwise… ” Joshua believes it’s something that everyone should be able to experience.
GX Australia will be held at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney and will run over the weekend of February 27th and 28th, 2016. The convention is timed to run just before the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
You can help make it happen by pledging your support or securing a ticket at a discounted rate via the Kickstarter Campaign.
