Bring on the 2015 Brisbane Halloween movie offerings! Firstly, congratulations to Kristian Fletcher on 15 years of hosting cult and classic movies in Brisbane. His Thursday 29 October ‘Triple Treat’ offering at the Fortitude Valley New Globe Theatre include the short horror films ARCADE and SKYPEMARE, followed by the 1980s low grade, trash slasher movie KILLER WORKOUT.
Kristian’s Halloween night offering at the New Farm Cinemas is Eli Roth’s much anticipated GREEN INFERNO. It is definitely at the horror end of spooky movies with an R (18+) rating. Also no kiddies for New Farm Cinema’s Friday fright night offering of the horror comedy COOTIES (MA 15+), featuring children turned into killer zombies by cafeteria food.
Ben & Jerry’s Open Air Cinemas at Southbank special offerings on Friday 30 October are recently released horror comedy THE VISIT (M), as well as a 25th anniversary screening of the evocative EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (PG). Saturday 31 October viewings are the 1984 family favourite GHOSTBUSTERS (PG) and the 1988 BEETELJUICE (MA 15+) horror comedy.
Event Cinemas Myer Centre are offering classic zombie movies for this year’s Halloween. 2004 horror comedy SHAUN OF THE DEAD (MA 15+) will screen Friday 30 October and comic horror ZOMBIELAND (MA 15+) the next evening.
Various cinemas around Brisbane will be screening Vin Diesel’s just released action adventure THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (M) as well as the science fiction horror PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION (M). Chermside Event Cinema will also be offering the SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE (MA 15+) as a bonus film for those viewing Paranormal Activity on 31 October. Garden City Mt Gravatt Event Cinemas is trying to arrange a 40th anniversary screening of the ever popular science fiction musical THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (M) for 30 October, but this is yet to be confirmed.
Those looking for a PG experience can try the animated HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 on 31 October at various locations (eg Event Cinemas Carindale, Indooroopilly & Myer Centre; New Farm Cinema). If looking for a (G) experience, try an early evening 25th anniversary screening of family friendly THE ADDAMS FAMILY in Little Bayside Park as part of the Manly Harbour Village Halloween Street Party.
If venturing further south to the Gold Coast area, Movie World Fright Night should entertain. Finalists in the Reel Horror Film Competition have been announced as SUDDEN DEATH, APPARITIONS, #ZOMBIE, INJURIOUS and THE OTHER HOUSE but details of their screenings and judging don’t seem to have been released. Other horror film themed attractions include mazes based on Friday the 13TH, Wyrmwood and Wolf Creek 2 as well as the video game The Evil Within. Additionally there are themed scare precincts (Zombieland, Freaks, Demons Lair, Gothic Hall), panic room experiences and live music. Check out ticket sales beforehand so you won’t be disappointed: https://frightnights.com.au/
Nearby Dreamworld will offer a more family friendly Halloween experience on the evening of 31 October in an event called Screamworld. Along with various other activities such as trick or treating in costume, two special screenings of DreamWorks Animations, THE PIG WHO CRIED WOLF and B.O.B’s BIG BREAK will be available for viewing in the Dreamworld cinema.
Happy viewing one and all.
